Addictions
There are 2 therapists
in the FVPA office trained
to work with addictions.
These include assessments
(to identify if there
is a problem), treatment,
relapse prevention and
maintenance therapy.
There are
many ways
to achieve
your goals of living
a
life free from your
addictions.
We respect the many
ways to
achieve
that goal,
including, but not limited
to: AA, meditation,
prayer,
exercise, medication,
etc.
Adoption
Adoption is an exciting time for a
couple and family. However, it also
holds a variety of struggles and stresses
for both the family and child. Candace
Anderson offers pre-placement and
post-placement counseling. She has
extensive experience dealing with
domestic and foreign adoption. She
is especially interested in working
with families and “settling
in issues”. Children can develop
anxiety and depression later and therapy
can help.
Anger
Management
Men, women and children all have anger
and problems with mismanaging anger
can affect anyone. Sometimes anger management
is court ordered and other times the
person wants to address these issues
before it breaks up relationships and
affects other areas of life, including
work and social areas. Eighty percent
of patients who enter anger management
receive benefit from it.
Bipolar
Group
Developed
by Jennifer Olkowski with
materials from books,
our bipolar disorder group
was designed for couples
who are looking for new
ways to work together
toward managing this challenge.
Spouses or partners are
required to participate
on an equal level as the
individual with the diagnosis.
Groups are held in the
early evenings to help
accommodate busy schedules.
Over the course of seven
weekly sessions couples
learn and practice the
ability to identify bipolar
signs (depressive and
manic), communicate effectively
and minimize their highs
and lows cooperatively
through identifying triggers
and taking steps to minimize
the impact. Follow-up
sessions are available
for individuals or couples.
Child
and Adolescent Counseling
We deal with a variety of issues and
concerns regarding children and adolescents.
Often, parents are at a loss as to how
to help their child. We assist families
in dealing with these struggles, and
looking at the choices they have in
the fast-paced and complicated society
with live in. We also take pride in
our thorough work with blended families
and pediatric anxiety issues.
Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy
With cognitive behavioral therapy,
the therapist works with the patient
to identify the thoughts/though patterns
that may be contributing to his/her
distress. Working closely with the
client, various behavior therapy techniques
are taught by the therapist with the
goal to alter these unhealthy thoughts
and behaviors and help resolve psychological
problems.
Dual Diagnosis
Many people who suffer
from addictions are
also dealing with
a second disorder
at the same time (like
depression, bipolar
disorder and anxiety).
Many people are self-medicating
these disorders with
alcohol and drugs.
When a person has
an addiction as well
as another or second
disorder, this is
defined as dual diagnosis.
At FVPA, there are
therapists who are
trained and have experience
in treating the special
needs of these individuals.
It is important to
treat both disorders.
Ignoring one disorder
can make the other
one worse.
Grief
Counseling
Clinicians at FVPA recognize and respect
the many aspects surrounding the loss
of a loved one. We promote the goal
of helping the individual to grieve
and address the personal loss in a healthy
manner. We help the client to express
his/her feelings about the loss, accepting
and adjusting to life after the loss
and coping with the changes after the
loss. We hope to assist the client in
recognizing the normal aspects of grieving,
coping with the pain and feeling supported
through this difficult time.
Men’s
Issues
Sometimes men identify issues and problems
with their wives and girlfriends. They
may be related to intimacy, communication,
parenting, or work. Sometimes these
problems have originated with their
parents, siblings or college/military.
Usually, the therapist will meet with
the male client and evaluate the symptoms,
then invite the couple in together to
discuss treatment options and address
the various issues.
Psychiatry
Psychiatrists are
physicians
who specialize in
mental
health. They interview
patients to identify
the source of their
distress. Psychiatrists
coordinate, when
needed,
with counselors
and other doctors.
They
present treatment
options, including,
if needed,
medication.
